About our work

As an interest group and information center for the performing arts, the ITI Germany is committed to their free development and the preservation of the diversity of their forms of expression.

The German Centre of the International Theatre Institute e.V. (ITI) is a section of the International Theatre Institute. It is made up of personal and corporate members and as a non-profit association receives public funding for its projects in Germany. The office is located in Berlin.

As an interest group and information centre for the performing arts, we are committed to their free development and the preservation of the diversity of their forms of expression.

We promote international cooperation between artists and advocate for their rights in national and international initiatives, associations and committees.

In our work, we initiate and accompany dialogue between scholarly research and practice in the performing arts. Our information portals, publications and the media library provide public access to this knowledge.

Theatre artists and representatives of associations and institutions from all areas of the performing arts are involved In our network.

We represent the ITI world organisation at UNESCO in the Intergovernmental Committee for the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.  

The ITI Germany's work

The ITI – German Centre provides and organises advisory services, festivals, symposiums and professional meetings, publications on the performing arts in national and international contexts, and work in national and international committees.

The German Centre of the ITI organises one of the largest international festivals of the performing arts in the Federal Republic of Germany, Theater der Welt.  

The ITI – German Centre develops its own projects in the fields of theatre and dance, cultural education, cultural heritage, the culture and creative industries, and is also an information and documentation centre for the performing arts in Germany.

History

The Federal German section of the ITI has existed since 1955, the Federal Republic has been a member of the ITI world organisation since 1957. In 1991, it merged with the GDR centre, which was founded in 1959. More than 200 artists, theatre professionals and institutions from all fields of the performing arts are members of the German Centre of the International Theatre Institute e.V.
