On the occasion of World Theater Day on March 27, the ITI Center Germany has been awarding a "World Theater Day Prize" since 1985 as an honorary prize to artists and institutions whose theater work has had an outstanding international impact as a life's work.

In 2010, the International Balzan Prize Foundation honored Prof. Dr. Manfred Brauneck, the first theater scholar to receive the award. He donated half of the prize money to the research project Die Rolle der freien Theaters im europäischen Theater der Gegenwart (The Role of Independent Theater in Contemporary European Theater).

Szenenwechsel was a Robert Bosch Stiftung funding programme in cooperation with the ITI Germany, which supported theatres and independent theatre groups from the German-speaking region in developing or producing a play with a partner from Eastern Europe or North Africa.
