As diverse as the theater landscape, so diverse are its structural and spatial manifestations. How theater is performed in Germany depends to a large extent on the Where: Whether representative classicism or functional modernity, new construction or repurposing, proscenium stage or open stage, center or periphery – it is always architectures and spatial practices, urban planning and socio-spatial contexts that help shape the artistic program.
On the occasion of the awarding of the Federal Theater Prize 2026 to four theaters, this podcast portrays theater through its structural and spatial form. Each of the four performance venues is made experienceable through an auditory walk. Places and buildings are explored while walking – as a Walk & Talk between the urbanist and theater scholar Dr. Juliane Zellner and a distinguished voice for each respective theater.
The four episodes will be released in April, May, June, and July.

HELLERAU Euroäisches Zentrum der Künste
Where is this Hellerau? What story/stories does the building of the Festival Theatre tell? In which rooms is free art produced here? A tour with Verena Eitel and Dr. Juliane Zellner across the grounds of Hellerau - the European Centre for the Arts in Dresden.
Verena Elisabet Eitel is a theatre/film scholar and dramaturg. She researches the uses of film/screen in performance arrangements as well as theatre spaces and architectures. Together with Barbara Büscher, she edited the publication HELLERAU – European Centre for the Arts Dresden: History, Spatial Programme, Curatorial Concepts and Artistic Projects.
